Enhanced Cover for COVID-19 available on Southdowns travel policies, underwritten by AXA

We’re pleased to let you know that our travel policies will provide you with enhanced cover for claims arising as a consequence of COVID-19.

Before you travel, we’ve included cover for cancellation due to you falling ill with COVID-19 and being unable to travel or being required to self-isolate, subject to medical certification or an official test result.

During your trip, all our policies include cover for any medical claim due to COVID-19 while travelling. We’ve also included cover for curtailment (if you need to come home early) due to the illness of a close relative due to COVID-19.

Our policies will continue to provide all other cover for non-COVID-19 related incidents, including Emergency Medical Costs, Baggage, Passports, Money and Personal Accident claims, as usual during your trip.

Please note that we’re able to offer these enhanced benefits for COVID-19 as long as the Foreign & Commonwealth Office are not advising against travel to your destination. To make what we do (and don’t) cover as clear as possible, we’ve created the following summary to provide the information you might need:

1. Trip cancellation

A: Your policy will cover you, subject to the normal terms, when it is necessary to cancel your trip because:

  1. You or a close relative fall ill with COVID-19 or another infectious disease before you travel.
  2. The UK Government require a person insured by your policy to quarantine or self-isolate on the date you are scheduled to depart.
  3. A family member you were due to stay with has to quarantine or self-isolate and you have nowhere else to stay.
  4. Your specific destination overseas is subject to the following travel restrictions:
  1. the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office advise against travel; or
  2. the Ministry of foreign affairs or local authorities are denying entry; or
  3. the Ministry of foreign affairs or local authorities require a person insured by your policy to quarantine or self-isolate on arrival.

B: Your policy will not cover you for costs where:

  1. You are legally entitled to a refund in the form of cash or voucher from your airline and/or travel provider.
  2. The travel restrictions in point 4 are as a direct result of the World Health Organisation declaring a pandemic or known event.

2. Trip curtailment

A: Your policy will cover you, subject to the normal terms, when it is necessary to curtail (cut short) your trip because:

  1. The Ministry of foreign affairs or local authorities impose restrictions during your trip and you are asked to return home due to COVID-19 or another infectious disease or pandemic illness.
  2. You have been denied boarding at your UK departure airport due to detected symptoms of COVID-19 or another infectious disease.
  3. A close relative becomes ill with COVID-19 or another infectious disease while you are travelling.

B: Your policy will not cover you for costs where:

  1. You are legally entitled to a refund in the form of cash or voucher from your airline and/or travel provider.

3. Medical cover

A: Your policy will cover you, subject to the normal terms, for the necessary and reasonable costs of:

  1. Emergency medical treatment, quarantine and repatriation if you contract COVID-19 or another infectious disease while you are abroad.
  2. Additional accommodation if you contract COVID-19 or another infectious disease while you are abroad and are unable to return home as planned.

B: Your policy will not cover you for costs where:

  1. Your departure from the UK was against the advice of the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

Current Annual Multi-Trip policyholders

If you have been an active Southdowns Annual Multi-Trip policyholder from before 17 March 2020 and also had a trip booked prior to that date, we previously contacted you to explain the additional protection that our insurer, AXA, agreed to provide in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This included cover for trip cancellation that was both necessary and reasonable following the issue of FCO travel advice against your intended destination due to COVID-19, and you were not legally entitled to a refund or voucher from your airline or travel provider.

We're pleased to confirm this additional protection will remain in place for all trips booked before 17 March 2020 and will transfer to the renewal of your Annual-Multi Trip policy as long as there is no break in cover.
